Iranian MP: Sanctions no longer have the meaning and function they had in the past

A member of the Presidium of the Islamic Consultative Assembly spoke about the paradigm shift in the international system at the “Opportunities for Iran-China Economic Cooperation” meeting.

Ruhollah Motafekr-Azad, a member of the Presidium of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, stated in a specialized session on “Opportunities for Economic Cooperation between Iran and China: The political economy conditions in our country and the field of political economy have undergone significant events in recent years. What happened in the past two months in the UN Security Council can be interpreted as a unique international event; a new event that changed the equations and set a new foundation. The joint cooperation of Iran, Russia, and China on a specific issue opened a new chapter. This event is significant not only for Iran but also for the Security Council, because perhaps after nearly 80 years of the formation of this body, it was the first time that two veto holders did not accept and recognize a Security Council resolution.

The MP added: “A new game has been formed in which the components of the previous game no longer make sense; sanctions will no longer have the same meaning and function as before. Global transactions are now moving towards other currencies, and in the next ten years, many of the current structures will lose their meaning and effectiveness.”

The member of the Presidium of the Parliament emphasized in the end: In the new global conditions, we must distance ourselves from the tired and one-dimensional views of international interactions and move towards understanding the plurality in the international game. Instead of accusing the currents, we must see who is seeking to secure the interests of the people and the country. In different fields, we must define diverse baskets of cooperation and, while maintaining exchanges with the whole world, have a precise understanding of the direction of the global economy so that a designed and effective path can be set for the future of the country.
