US President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order imposing a 25% tariff on goods imported from India. The move is a response to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil, which are seen as a threat to US national security and foreign policy objectives and are escalating the trade war between the two countries.

The new 25 percent tariff will be imposed on top of other existing economic tariffs against India, according to a White House statement. The move confirms Trump’s intention to increase tariffs on India, which he announced earlier this week.

The new tariff, a major change in the trade war between the US and India, will apply to all goods of Indian origin that enter the United States on or after September 17, 2025. The rule does not apply to goods that were in transit before that date. According to Trump, the tariff will be calculated ad valorem, meaning it will be added to other existing import duties based on the value of the goods.

The Indian government strongly criticized this move, calling it “unfair, unjustified and illogical” and emphasizing that it will regulate its energy imports based on market conditions and will take all necessary measures to defend its national interests.
